RECIPE: Cherry Cheese Pie

Today I am over at The Happy Housewife sharing about one of our most favorite desserts, Cherry Cheese Pie. This is a great recipe for a Valentine's Day at home.

I haven't blogged this yet, but if you follow me on Facebook, you may already know ....

I have been reading The Happy Housewife for some time now. She is a Navy wife and homeschooler. You may remember a post I did for her back in June, The Happy Birthday, Month.

RECIPE: Vanilla Sugar

Vanilla Sugar is something I always have in my kitchen. I don't use it every day, but when we do make a treat, Vanilla Sugar is something I most often use as my sweetener. (In our house, a treat is defined as an occasional yummy that we make occasionally, usually to celebrate a holiday or event. It may contain more processed ingredients than we eat on an everyday basis, in this case, Vanilla Sugar!)

I began making Vanilla Sugar over five years now and my kids even ask for it in recipes. It just a little adds umph to whatever recipe you add it to. And I don't know about you, but I am always looking for a little umph.

First, let's talk ingredients. Quality ingredients make a quality recipe. And cheap ingredients just don't belong in anyone's kitchen. ("Frugal" does not equal "cheap." My kitchen is very frugal, but I don't use cheap stuff. And that, my friends, is another post altogether.)

I use evaporated cane juice in place of the super white overly processed granulated sugar found in most kitchens today. Evaporated cane juice is a less processed than white granulated sugar. It is still sugar which is why I use it sparingly (read: in treats,) but it does contain trace minerals and is actually a little sweeter than processed sugar - so you can use less!

Vanilla Sugar is oh-so-easy to make.

Pour two cups of evaporated cane juice into a large bowl.

Measure out one tablespoon of amazing vanilla.

Stir it up, making sure to get it evenly distributed.

Spread evenly in a large cookie sheet. Allow it to dry about six hours. I put my cookie sheet in the oven so it is out of the way. It smells heavenly when it is drying. One way to speed up drying time is to turn on your oven light. Oh it makes the smell waft through the house even more!

When completely dry, break it up with a metal spatula (plastic is too flimsy and makes a big mess. Ask me how I know.)

Now you have two options. You need to break up the sugar so it is granulated again and usable. I run it through my sifter, but you could also use a potato masher or even a glass to break it up. The sifter makes it nice a even though. And I usually have a cute kid around whose favorite kitchen job is to use the sifter.

Store in an airtight container. It is beautiful in a mason jar!

Vanilla Sugar makes a great gift too!

pancakes or waffles
homemade hot cocoa (recipe coming up in another edition of 12 Months of Christmas)
Perfectly Pumpkin Bread
Snickerdoodles (recipe coming up in another edition of 12 Months of Christmas)
in the sugar bowl for friends who like sugar in their coffee or tea
any recipe that calls for granulated sugar

TOS Review: Celestial Almanack

I have often said to my family that there is no other place on earth where the stars shine as brightly as they do where we live. Our home is situated way out from the city where it is super dark at night - with no street lights! I was amazed at how beautiful the sky was the very first time I came to visit my husband's family (although then we were just friends!) The winter months are even more beautiful - breathtaking actually!

What to Teach When
Celestial Almanack from Classical Astronomy turns anyone into a star-gazer. Even with the full moon this week we were able to find constellations easily following the information presented in the Celestial Almanack.

One thing I found extremely helpful was the explanation of Leap Year. I had always heard "it has something to do with the lunar calendar." As a child, I accepted that and never cared about why (until I started homeschooling and was asked by my own kids!) I planned to teach a unit on Leap Year later this month, however, we were satisfied with the information we learned through Celestial Almanack.

We will be purchasing the Eclipse Shades for the upcoming Solar Eclipse in May. I remember making an eye shield when I was in elementary school to protect our eyes from the solar eclipse that happened in 1984. I cannot wait to share this with my kids since we weren't allowed to view it when I was in school.

Snowball Balloon Ornament

Can you believe it is February? I certainly cannot. Though the calendar says it is winter, my part of Georgia has not really seen winter weather yet. It is totally bizarre to listen to my boys through an open window while they jump on the trampoline out in the yard without jackets! And I am sitting at my desk in a tee shirt.

This month's ornament is one I have wanted to make for some time. I want them in all colors to match my living room though we will probably end up making them in red, white and green. Wouldn't they be neat in a tri-colored Christmas yarn?

I grew up with what we called The Grown-Up Tree and The Kid Tree. The Grown Up Tree was a live tree, usually cedar. It was in the living room where you entered the house and it matched our living room, white lights, ornaments perfectly spaced. It was basically my mom's tree.

The Kid Tree was in the den. It had colored lights and funky ornaments my sister and I made through the years. That was where Christmas was for us, where we put the presents and where we sat and gazed at our tree.

I have only had one tree in my house since leaving home. I am considering a Grown-Up Tree and a Kid Tree when we get settled again.

12 Months of Christmas January 2012 Linky Party

Welcome to the end of January and our very first 12 Months of Christmas linky! Have you been sprinkling Christmas throughout the month?

I'll be honest, I've tried. I've thought about it. I've attempted to make our ornament a few times with my boys but it hasn't happened yet.

We've had a lot of illness in the house and 12 Months of Christmas took a backseat. Well, while we are being honest, a lot of things took a backseat. But that is one of the very reasons I love homeschooling and blogging. We can take a break when we need to.

It is also a bit challenging to think of Christmas when we have just come out of the Christmas season. We missed some things we usually do (like making ornaments!) I have a plan for one so it is on the agenda for tomorrow - with or without my boys!! With the beautiful day we have forecasted, making Christmas ornaments may not be on our minds!

Smart Sweets

I became familiar with Kitchen Stewardship a couple of years ago while looking for more wholesome-than-I-was-cooking recipes. Katie Kimball is amazing in the kitchen. Kitchen Stewardship is now one of my go-to places when I feel a need to try a new recipe. She's taught me the ins and outs of soaking flours, dried beans and making yogurt. Kitchen Stewardship also made me realize that even though I was "cooking from scratch," it wasn't necessarily healthy. And because of her I've changed some of my ways of doing things.

I have talked about Healthy Snacks to Go (one of my most favorite ebooks ever!!) and Family Camping (which went with me on several camping trips last summer) and now Kitchen Stewardship has delighted me once again! Smart Sweets: 30 Recipes to Indulge Your Sweet Tooth is a "healthy-er" way to cook treats for your family. It has made me feel better about the times I indulge my kids' sweet tooth with cookies or brownies or even chocolate cake!!

But Smart Sweets is more than just a recipe book. Katie explains (in the frank and honest way she always does in her very descriptive, detailed, and thoroughly researched blog posts) the differences in "healthy-er" sweeteners and why we should make these Smart Sweets for our friends and family (it may "tempt others to eat wholesome foods.")

My personal favorite, Almond Joy Bark, is a variation of one of the recipes included in the book. There are always plenty of variations included in any recipe Katie creates.

Dawn's Perfectly Pumpkin Bread

This is my most requested recipe. It comes from the very first cookbook I ever bought. We make it year round for breakfast and snacks but folks especially request it at the holidays.

Dawn's Perfectly Pumpkin Bread

4 eggs
2-1/2 cups sugar (I use evaporated cane juice.)
1 cup butter, softened
1 15 oz. can pumpkin
2/3 cup water
3 1/2 cups flour (I use part whole wheat when making it for my family.)
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (can use any mixture of baking spices: allspice, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg)
2 teaspoons good quality vanilla

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Cream butter in a large mixing bowl until fluffy. Add sugar and pumpkin. Add eggs one at a time.

Sift together dry ingredients. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with water, mixing well between additions.

Fold in vanilla.

Bake in preheated oven until an inserted knife comes out clean. I love my Pampered Chef Mini Loaf Pan for gift giving. We usually make muffins to eat for breakfast (and snacks!)

Muffins 18-20 minutes
Mini-Loaves 30-35 minutes
Large Loaf 45-60 minutes

TOS Review: We Choose Virtues

We Choose Virtues is a character training program that uses adorable cartoons and unforgettable catchphrases to teach children (and teens) the principles of biblical integrity.

With an easy 10-minute-a day-system, families, homeschools, community schools and youth groups can learn the morals our grandparents grew up with.

My boys often wait on pins and needles for our review packages to come from the post office. They also watch over my shoulder on occasion as I open various downloads that have been emailed to me. Farm Boy immediately begged for me to print out some pages from the coloring book when he walked through my office the day I received them. The coloring pages are adorable and full size with the name of the virtue at the top.

The Virtue Clue Cards are glossy, full-color and the size of business cards. They are used to introduce the virtue and provide a reminder of the character trait being developed.

The Teacher's Handbook explains the program and is included in many of the kits. It is also available separately. This full color 48-page book is filled with helps and teaching aids for helping students learn what it is to be patient, forgiving and gentle (and nine other imperative character traits of integrity.)

What to Teach When
Character training with We Choose Virtues can begin as early as three years of age for families and homeschools. Community Programs can use the younger or older program depending on the age their are working with.

Final Word

2012 Home Goals

My Kitchen (that seriously needs some color!!)

Today I'm joining up with Nester's 2nd Annual Home Goals Linky. These are the things I want to get done in my house this year.

Make my bed.

I've had this on my list for three years at least – maybe more. I LOVE this bed. I would love it in antique white as shown here but I have grown to love a pale robin's egg blue too. We will need color as we continue to rent a home with our future nomadic lifestyle.

Ana White Farmhouse Bed

Put stuff on my walls.

Most of my walls are empty. Most walls I've lived with in the various places we've lived have been blank. I hate it. But Nester is freeing me from the need for things to be perfect. I will hang things. And I will love it. (And if I DO hate it, I'll take them down and re-hang something!)

Remove photos of fake people from the picture frames in my house.

And replace them with people I actually know! I'm not the only one in the world who has fake photos. I actually saw a few fake family pictures hanging on my sister's wall over Christmas. :)

Decorate seasonally.

I realized after decorating for fall, a month of December birthdays and then Christmas, that I love seasonal décor. Why not do that year-round too? I also want to make some sort of interchangeable wreath for the seasons as well as a few special ones for various holidays.

Make a rug for schoolroom from recycled tee shirts.

This is a big project, but we spend a lot of time in our schoolroom. I want something fun to go with our fun, mistreated, twin sheet curtains (which really need to be hung higher!!)

De-clutter and simplify.
We aren't moving until sometime around the first of the year 2013 or spring 2013 at the latest. But I would really like to enjoy the remainder of the time we have in this house and would like to be de-cluttered by March.

Finish a few projects I started last year and never finished.Like the shower curtain for our bathroom that I made when we were snowed in for an entire week LAST January - this week in fact!! It has been waiting to be hung but doesn't have holes for the shower curtain hooks. Lame, I know. I'm scared of them. But I will be tackling that this month because it doesn't have to be perfect!! I also want to make a Family Sign.

Math, Math and More Math

Math has always been a sore subject in our house. When we began our homeschooling journey three years ago, we attempted Math U See after numerous recommendations from friends and acquaintances. Unfortunately, it didn't work at the time.

We then just worked on foundational basics following What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know. We covered basic calendar, addition math facts, time, intro to money and things like that. We loved the idea behind Math on the Level but weren't able to commit the resources to purchasing the program.

Various curriculum reviews for TOS on math kept us going last year but I still heard, "I HATE math!" every single day. Then we tried a few units from Math Mammoth and thought we liked it but daily worksheets on the same subject became cumbersome. I thought it might be okay if we followed a graded yearly curriculum for Math Mammoth. After it came up in our cue for reviewing I decided to wait to purchase something for this school year. We kept working on math facts, discovered Michele's Math and Life of Fred and went deeper with money and telling time. And even after a positive review period for Math Mammoth, I once again heard the dreaded, "I HATE math!!"

After many more recommendations for Math U See, we tried it again int he fall. We have been blessed by some two different sets of great friends who allowed us to borrow their sets while they took some time off during the holidays. And guess, what? We love it. All of us.

No more pouting.

No more whining about math.

In fact, they BEG me to do math every day.

We still love Life of Fred and will continue to work through his story. But Math U See is our curriculum.

The Learning of Language

Reading/Grammar

For the past two years, we have re-vamped our homeschool in January. Last school year it took me until then to find the Language Arts curriculum. We muddled through fall and began in January with Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading and First Language Lessons. We loved it. And though we were then a bit behind, I pushed through and covered a good bit in the rest of the school term we had. Because we started mid-year we did not complete the curriculum by our summer break. Picking back up in August we are still working our way through some of the lessons. We should finish by the end of February and be ready for First Language Lessons 2 on March 1. I will be pushing them to complete FLL 2 by August so we will be ready for FLL 3 for the new school year.

Writing

What I didn't realize was that I needed to also begin Writing With Ease. So that is on our schedule to begin this month. We'll be a little behind with that but we will strive to catch up.

Handwriting

Ugh. Handwriting is the thorn in my flesh of homeschooling. Both hubby and I have terrible handwriting and our boys both struggle with it as well. We've run the gamete on handwriting curriculum but I think we have decided on Getty-Dubay's Italic Handwriting. We are starting that this month too. I decided on it back in November but didn't want to start it before the holidays.

TOS Review: REAL Homeschool Spanish

Spanish. We need it in America. (That is a funny sentence, but it is actually very true.)

I took French in high school because I thought it was a prettier language. It was fun, but not very useful. (Although I did use my French just once while I was in Amsterdam on my way to Germany 17 years ago. I attempted to order from a menu and was able to determine a few things I did not want. But other than that, well, not so much.) Spanish, however, is quite a useful language both in America and abroad.

REAL stands for "Relax, Enjoy, Aspire and Learn Spanish." Created by a homeschool mom (with a doctorate in French who happens to be married to a native of Mexico,) this curriculum allows for students to learn the language and actually use it while incorporating it throughout the homeschool day. New material is introduced conversationally and then reinforced throughout the day and week in everyday life.

When you don't have a foreign language teacher living in your home, the next best thing could possibly be a teacher on your computer. We really enjoyed listening to the audio files included in with REAL Homeschool Spanish. Since I can only interpret a wee bit in my own limited knowledge of the Spanish language, being able to hear the words proved vital in the understand of what was being taught.

What to Teach When
REAL Homeschool Spanish is a family curriculum. It was created for a homeschool teacher who has had a introduction to the language but needs help teaching it. However, the author notes that with some preparation can be used by parents with no knowledge of the language (like me!)

I love that it is designed to be used throughout the day rather than only in the designated Spanish subject time. If you have read my blog at all, you know that I love the living aspect of education and that I prefer education to be something we participate in rather than read and study about all the time. REAL Homeschool Spanish also encourages using Spanish throughout the day to reinforce what is learned.

Another point I want to make is something I have always had a problem with in learning foreign languages. Most curriculums concentrate on the reading, speaking and writing of the language but lack in conversational use. REAL Homeschool Spanish really focuses on the actual use of the language in addition to reading and writing.

A sample of the curriculum is available for download on the website. Included in the sample is one of my favorite things - the Daily Curriculum Guide. The Daily Curriculum Guide is actually a step-by-step lesson plan in a one-page weekly format. So very helpful!!!

Final Word
The website is a bit challenging to navigate. It is beautiful and fresh but somewhat incomplete (About Page is a placeholder and the navigation bar doesn't work fully.) Be prepared to use your Back button as soon of the pages do not have the nav bar at the top!

If you are considering a foreign language this is the way to go! REAL Homeschool Spanish is a bargain for the homeschool family since it is reusable. I have loved learning Spanish right along side my kids (as I do with many of their subjects.)

I would also encourage if you have the option, to purchase the hardcopy of this curriculum. Many times I have purchased digital downloads of curriculum due to the lesser cost. However, one needs to consider how much you will be printing when purchasing a digital download. This curriculum is exhaustive and really deserves to be in a hardbound edition. In the long run, I think it would be more cost effective to purchase the hardcopy.

My friends and family think I'm weird. It started five years ago when we began treating Music Man's ADHD with diet instead of medicine. We took artificial flavors and colors out of our diet and began eating differently than most of those around us. It took some getting used to but we soon adjusted and we are so much healthier for it. As my kids got older they began questioning some of the decisions I make related to our eating habits. It was challenging when we would visit family and friends who still ate what we called "bad food."

Enter Vintage Remedies for Guys.

This extra-curriculum course explains why we eat like we do. It tells in simple terms what the bad stuff is in foods in our grocery stores. Pointing out which ingredients, that while approved for human consumption, are not the best choices for a healthy lifestyle. My kids are now starting to get the "why" of how we eat and not just the "what" (eat this not that because mom says it is healthier) - and it always helps when someone else backs up what mom says! (Is that a tween thing?)

Vintage Remedies for Guys is a how-to on living a healthy lifestyle. Divided into three sections covering Food and Nutrition, Health and Body and Natural Living, this book tells why we need to take care of our bodies and exactly how to do it. Growing up I was told, "Take care of your body, it's the only one you'll get." But I wasn't really told how to do that.

My boys love to help in the kitchen and Vintage Remedies for Guys has recipes both nourishing and hygienic. I love that the chapters are organized with information written to the students and also to the parents (including a supply list for the projects in each chapter!)

Many of the homemade bath product recipes are great for the kids to make for Christmas gifts!

Final Word

When we began our journey to real food, my boys were seven and three. They didn't really fight me on the changes since they were so young. Music Man hardly ate anything anyway so he didn't really care either.

I wish Vintage Remedies for Kids had been available back then. It would have been easier to teach them why we were packing real food in their lunch boxes instead of the pre-packaged junk that their friends we eating.

I seriously recommend these books for anyone with kids. It is easy to understand and a great way to set down good habits before adulthood.

TOS Review: I See Cards Fractazmic

We love games around here. Card games are probably one of our favorite types of games! And learning, well, yeah, we love that too. (Seriously!)

Fractazmic is a fractions card game. The game play reminds me of Gin Rummy. Instead of a group of cards in laid out in ascending order, in Fractazmic the object is to add the different fractions up to make a whole, or "1."

There are three colors of cards (or suits) and these adorable cartoon pictures that help kids see the fraction in their head. My boys thrive on seeing how math works. Fractazmic is a great hands-on activity that shows how the part of a whole fits together without the mess of cooking (which is how we usually work with fractions!)

TOS Review: Artistic Pursuits Book 1

I first heard of Artistic Pursuits last year but since we were so young in our homeschool did not look into it very much. When given the opportunity to review it this year, I jumped at the chance. I chose Book 1 since my kids are early elementary.

Book 1 is a great place to start. With 32 lessons, it is very do-able to get through in a school year. It is designed to introduce art history as well as a hands-on art project that relates to the particular era and medium being studied.

What to Teach When

Artistic Pursuits is a non-consumable curriculum. Once it is purchased, it can be used with multiple children (always a plus in my book!) With 10 books (levels) available, you can begin Artistic Pursuits in Pre-K and continue through the late high school years.

Book 1 is appropriate for elementary-aged children grades K-3. Book 2 and Book 3 continue through the early elementary years. They are written to the student and no teacher preparation is necessary/ i was able to gather the group of supplies needed for the lesson we were on and then sit down and read the lesson to my boys. The lesson begins with art history and then allows them the opportunity to get creative at the end of the lesson.

I really enjoyed Artistic Pursuits. The curriculum is worth the price, however, it can get a bit pricey for a frugal budget once you start purchasing materials all at once. There are four "groups" of materials used and they are used throughout the book, the first two groups of materials being used for the first nine lessons. By watching for sales, you should be able to plan ahead and find some good deals on products.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Nester had a guest poster a few days ago, her friend Haley from The Tiny Twig. She talked about a really cool girl party for the holidays themed around "favorite things" (a la Oprah.) She also invited us to share a few of our favorite things ($30 and under.) So here are mine!

Epson Salts
Yep, this is seriously one of my favorite things. If I every have a Favorite Things party, everyone will be getting this. A $3 bag of epson salts from Wally World. There is always at least one bag in my house (usually several!) I soak my feet every night after my kids go to bed. Yes, I said EVERY night. My hubby even knows I function better after my foot soak and gets it ready for me most nights! It is my super-cheap absolutely necessary indulgence after homeschooling, taxi-driving and attempting to keep my house in decent order. Try it. Twenty minutes of heaven.

Good Earth Lemongrass Green Tea
It was the first hot tea I ever loved so much I would drink even last drop!! I love teas but would often only drink about half a cup before I would set it down and forget about it. Maybe it was my ADD-having-to-do-several-things-at-once self. But I think they call it multi-tasking now. Anyway, not with this tea. I savor each sip. I get misty-eyed when I run out. (OK, not really, but it is that good!) (And it goes great with an epson salt foot soak!)

Lemon Vinegar
If you spend any amount of time with me, you will soon discover that I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS. That basically means that I react like I have allergies to any artificial fragrances (like perfume, candles, air fresheners) or harsh chemicals (anything that most people clean with.) I used to clean with plain ol' white vinegar. It isn't fancy and doesn't smell great, but I didn't react to it. AND it did the job. However, after discovering The Grocery Shrink last year, I have been making lemon vinegar and on occasion, orange vinegar! You just toss the lemon (or orange or lime) peels into a jar and cover with plain ol' cheap white vinegar. In a few days (or weeks if you forget it) you will have this pretty colored vinegar with a nicer smell to it. (The peels will be looking pretty yucky by then. Sometimes I remove them and sometimes I don't!) If you add a little lemon essential oils to it, the smell is even better!

So there are three of my favorite things. I love the idea of hosting a Favorite THiiiiiinnnnnnngs! party with girlfriends. Do you have something special to celebrate the holidays with your girlfriends? What "favorite thing" would you share with them?

Making December Birthdays Special: Decorating

Decorating for birthdays at Christmas can be a challenge. While some folks choose to decorate with Christmas sprinkled in, I have always tried to keep the birthdays and Christmas separate. When I had my first "Christmas baby" I chose to decorate after his birthday. That wasn't too difficult since there were still several weeks to enjoy the Christmas decorations. However, when his brother came along with a due date just days before Christmas, I knew I was going to have to change the way we decorated.

I keep one room undecorated for Christmas until after the birthdays. This is usually the kitchen/living room - with the exception of our tree which is now usually put up the first weekend in December.

I love using handcrafted reusable decorations. Last year, I made a few and this year I added several more.

Balloon Wreath
Using How Does She's Birthday Wreath Tutorial, we used our birthday wreath for the first time last year. I looked for several months for a wreath form at the thrift store and finally found a very ugly wreath for $1.00. This year, I added curling ribbon recycled from a cute bow that came on last year's present from the grandparents.

Birthday Pennant Banner
Last year I made a pennant banner from Pink and Polka Dot's Valentine's Pennant Tutorial using some shirts my kids had outgrown. But they were small flags and since they were stripes on a white background, they did not show up well. This year, I made another pennant banner, this time from Sew4Home and used my favorite bright bold colors. What a difference!! I love the way the yellow beads pop in the brightness of the other colors. (The beads were borrowed from a lacing toy.)

Birthday Crown
I made this crown last year following a great tutorial. Unfortunately, I did not save the link and can't find it again. (If you have seen it, please let me know where!!) The crown is reversible in my boys' favorite colors - blue for my oldest and red for my youngest. I may add some fun rick-rack to it this year if I have time.

Birthday Chair Cover

You can tell by my pictures that we live in a very brown house. There is brown paneling on all the walls in the living areas and kitchen. The doors are brown (to match the paneling.) The baseboards are brown too (to match the paneling and the doors.) I have tried to lighten up the very warm feeling of our living space with a cooler decorating scheme. But on birthdays, I brings out the brights - fire engine red, sunshine yellow, bold blue and kelly green! I love the brights for birthdays. Bright bold colors just spell FUN to me!!

For my chair cover, I took I took some stripey fabric and hemmed the edges. Then I added ties to the sides. I've already come up with a better way to do it though. I think I'll rework it after the holidays and add a tutorial when I do.

Birthday Plate, Tablecloth, Placemat and Napkins
I saw many adorable birthday plates around the web but couldn't justify the cost. I bought this one from the thrift store for $1.00 to hang on the wall for Christmas and decided it was the perfect birthday plate. My boys loved it!! All meals are served to the birthday kid on the extra special fancy red plate. This year I am planning to make napkins, a place-mat for the honoree and a tablecloth to go with our Birthday Plate. I have in my mind a patchwork tablecloth but we'll see. (Kinda fudged it for the pictures!)

Birthdays are supposed to be special. Though birthdays during the hustle and bustle of the holidays can be a challenge, as long as the birthday person feels special, that is all that matters.

Review: FFH One Silent Night

We love Christmas music in our house. So when I was given the opportunity to review a Christmas CD, I jumped at it. (Look at that album cover. So precious!! Totally got me in the Christmas mood. And I so wanna make one of those kissing balls too now!!)

FFH released their latest album, One Silent Night on October 18, 2011. A group who originally formed in 1991, FFH is a group I have listened to since my college days. TOS Review: Time Timer

The Time Timer is exactly what the name implies. It's a timer what shows the time counting down with a visual cue of how much time has elapsed and how much is left.

Music Man still struggles with the concept of time - it is too abstract for him. We have had various therapists recommend using a timer for different activities throughout his life when he struggled with getting ready or eating too slow etc. I have use numerous timers in the past but they never really worked for him. He just didn't get it. And now he does. :)

The Time Timer has really helped Music Man grasp the concept of how much time he has left to do an activity. Its quiet beep-beep lets him know when his time is up and doesn't shock you as many timers do when they are down counting down. I can ask him how much time he has left and he is actually able to tell me since it is clearly displayed on the Time Timer. The Time Timer has even helped him understand more about actually telling time since he now has a visual cue of what each increment looks like.

Final WordWe do love the Time Timer. But as a one-income family on a very tight budget, I would honestly not have even considered it though for the price that it is. I wish the smaller one was a more reasonable price, especially for families with special needs children. I think it would be invaluable in a special needs classroom and has definitely helped Music Man "see" how much time is left for his activities. But even now, knowing how much I love it, it is a challenge for me to say put this on your purchase list only because of the cost. If you have an older child who is struggling with the concept of time, it may very well be worth the purchase price.

TOS Review: Math Mammoth

I became familiar with Math Mammoth last year when it was recommended to me by a friend. At first glance I was impressed by the ease of the website and the cost of the curriculum. We ordered a couple of ebooks that we thought would be most helpful to round out our first grade year (Money and Clock.) Once I started really looking into them, I was thrilled that I had found such a great thing at such a bargain price!

As I began planning for this current school year, I looked again at Math Mammoth. Not only do they offer individual ebooks for practice on specific subjects, they also offer complete curriculum by grade level. I settled on the Second Grade Curriculum.

One of the things I like best about Math Mammoth is that it is self-teaching! I can sit my kids down with 2-3 worksheets and everything they need to know is right there! Perfect for a mama who hates math and really struggles with not showing her hatred for math to her kiddos!

Book Review: The Grace Effect

It has been a long time since I have read a book I did not want to put down. The Grace Effect took the honor as the only book I have done that with this year. Reading like a novel, but so much more, author Larry Taunton chronicles his journey of the adoption of his daughter, Sasha, from Ukraine.

Several friends and family members of ours have been through the international adoption process. But none of them have given me the detail of their experience quite like what I read in The Grace Effect.

Throughout their story, the Tauntons quietly challenge followers of Christ everywhere to take care of the widows and orphans of this world. But they shouldn't have to challenge us since it is actually commanded. (James 1:26-27)

My heart aches for those orphans who are locked away in unspeakable conditions that we can not imagine. My heart aches for the families who step up to make a difference in one life but are then sucked into the corruption wrapped up as international adoption. My heart just aches.

TOS Review: Bower Books The Person I Marry

The Person I Marry is a must-have for anyone with children. Perfectly suited for any age, it is never too young to think about the type of person you should marry one day. My boys have already begun hearing about "love" and "girlfriends" and ask all kinds of questions about marriage. This book has helped me steer them on the appropriate path in thinking about marriage (even at the tender ages of eleven and seven!)

Throughout the book, characteristics of the qualities on that page are beautifully reinforced in the background. Each double-page spread deals with a certain aspect of marriage and gently confirms what a person should look for in a husband or wife.

Written and illustrated by husband-wife team Gary and Jan Bower, this book strengthens God's design for biblical marriage. I think it also allows to open the conversation towards only dating (or in our house, courting) one who displays these characteristics.

I've read many children's books by authors who aim to rhyme just because they think a children's book "should" rhyme. But then the rhythm and flow doesn't work out and it seems forced. The Person I Marry has perfected rhyme and rhythm. I can only assume the other books follow the same rhythm and rhyme! The story comes alive within the words on each page.

Making December Birthdays Special

Both of my boys have birthdays in December. They are the first and second weeks of December followed by Christmas the third week. When I learned that I was due on Thanksgiving with my oldest, I began researching how to deal with a birthday at the holidays. I wasn't too worried since he was due at Thanksgiving and he would certainly be here before Christmas was in full of swing. My due date came and went and he was born two long weeks later, a full week into December. Four years later, his brother was born in mid-December, coming a week before his December 20th due date.

I laughingly tell people we party all the month of December. And we really do. But the holiday season in full swing, I feel it is especially important to make my boys feel special even though everyone around them is focused on Christmas.

The Big No-Nos For Christmas Birthdays

Do NOT combine presents (birthday/Christmas) since the child's birthday is during the holiday season.
Do NOT wrap the birthday present in Christmas paper.
Do NOT go to a Christmas function on the night of the child's birthday.
Do NOT have a Christmas-themed cake, decorations or card.

Over the next three weeks, I will share how we do birthdays in our house. We are on a very frugal budget so I aim for big impact with little cost.

TOS Review: Apologia Educating the Whole Hearted Child

When I began homeschooling out of necessity, I had no idea what I was getting into. I knew I was fed up with public school not providing for my child and that I could certainly do better than the education we were told he would get in his local school district.

Little did I know how much our lives would change with homeschooling. It is a lifestyle, not just something we do for a few hours everyday to satisfy an education requirement. But I knew very little about the lifestyle when I started homeschooling. I focused on education and “catching him up” - laying a foundation that was not there. Had I known about Educating the WholeHearted Child when we began this journey, I think the first year or two of homeschooling may have looked a little different. (And perhaps it would have been quite a bit less stressful!)

In the beginning, I tried to make sure my child was "socialized" and had plenty of extra-curricular activities to do outside out our scheduled school time. And over the past two years, I something began to tug at my heart. My desire was to have my children home more (we were homeschooling, weren't we?) It was a difficult transition since I tried to get them so involved in things when we first started. However, I felt it was what my heart needed and what their hearts needed.

I realized that there was so much more that I wanted my children to have than just a good education. I wanted to be the primary influence in my children's lives and by homeschooling I could accomplish that. But sending them out to be “socialized” seemed futile. And what I they needed more of was me.

Educating the WholeHearted Child was first published in 1994. This is the third edition and from what I understand, it has been completely revised and expanded. It deals with the whole heart of the child and those things that matter to the upbringing and nurturing of children.

Divided into four sections (and 18 chapters,) each aspect gently guides parents on how to be the influence that we should be for our children.

And then there are tons and tons of resources at the end of the book - lists, lists, and more lists. And if you know me personally, you know I love lists!!

This book is not so much curriculum as it is a guidebook for the homeschool family - a lifebook if you will.

This is THE book to purchase if you can only choose one to buy when you start. As a somewhat veteran homeschooler, it is vital to the home library as well. This is what I want my home to look like. If you are a Christian you should be doing these things in your home, even if you aren't officially homeschooling.

I love a good movie. But I have loved very few sports movies. Mainly because I have seen very few good sports movies. And The Mighty Macs is a good sports movie. But there is so much more than sports in The Mighty Macs. Set in 1971, Cathy Rush is a recently married woman whose odds are against her. The world (and her husband) are still pulling her to stay home and be a wife. She wants to pursue a dream.

A catholic women's college whose financial books are in the red, doesn't seem like the likely place to create a basketball program, especially when they have no gym. But that is exactly what happened to Immaculata College. With no support from the administration and with continuing issues at home, Cathy Rush pushes through and builds a team.

And what's more, my children can see it. It is Rated G! It was clean and wholesome and taught morals. The theme of going for your dreams, working hard, and being part of a team radiate throughout the movie.

I was still smiling the morning after I saw it. Seriously. And movies just don't do that for me. :) I was even more impressed to learn that this is the first movie produced by Quaker Media. We need more movies like this.

I'd like to encourage you to get out and see this movie - see it this weekend if at all possible!!

The Mighty Macs opens today, Friday,October 21, 2011. See it. You won't be disappointed.

This Blog is Not my Home

It's not my job either. I thought I wanted it to be my job.

I love writing. I love blogging. I love the blogging community. But I love my children more. I love my calling more. And my calling is my children.

A few months ago I began consciously noticing how much I was on the computer while my kids were awake. Then I noticed things that didn't get done because I was blogging. Or emailing. Or Facebooking. Or reading others' blogs.

Then I started thinking about the legacy I was leaving for my children. Did I want them to remember me on the computer? Or Facebooking on my phone? Or blogging?

I started listening to myself ...

"Let me just finish this post."

"I need to send one more email."

"After I finish reading this, we can do that."

Or do I want them to remember we played? And built forts. And created art.

Do I want them to remember that I was there for them - not just caring for their daily needs, but getting down and living life with them.

This blog is not my home.

It took me over a month to get this post ready since I am only writing now when my kids are not awake. I have some reviews and other commitments that will take precedence over more personal posts, however, know that I am not abandoning my blog. I just have more pressing things on my plate at the moment.

Cooper and Me

Cooper and Me is a cute little book written by a mother-daughter team. An artist from a very young age, Alexa Peters, wanted to give back to others through her illustrations. The idea for this book was found in her sketchbooks.

The theme of the book is separation anxiety. The little girl in the story is getting ready for her first day of school. She is worried about what school will be like and about being away from her mother and dog, Cooper. Her mother finds a solution - a miniature Cooper doll that the little girl can take to school. She finds comfort in the "mini Cooper" (*grin*) and actually enjoys her time at school.

The book is the first in a series of books that deal with real life. There are several interactive features at the end of the book that allow families to discuss feelings and issues related to the theme.

On the website, a kids' page has coloring pages and games. Reading guides are also available for parents and teachers.

Raising Real Men

Being that I am a girl, raised by a single mom with only a sister, I knew nothing about boys.

And I am blessed to be the mother of two of them.

They are loud.

And rowdy.

And they can't sit still for anything.

And I love it.

But I had no idea this behavior was normal. And I tried to get them to sit still. And listen during school. And not make everything a competition. And well, stop being boys. But they just couldn't. Because they ARE boys.

Raising Real Men, written by Hal and Melanie Young, has assured me that this behavior is quite normal and actually needs to be encouraged. And it has brought me hope that I can raise my boys to be strapping young men who will grow into responsible adults (who will still probably act like boys!)

Issues such as manly virtues, having heroes, courtship, bearing arms, competition are address in Raising Real Men.

I cannot stop talking about this book. Seriously. It should be required reading as soon as the doctor says, "It's a BOY!"

We are always looking for math games around here. I have two very oral kinetic learners who love, love, love to play! So of course I said "yes!" to reviewing a product for math games. And my goodness, isn't he just so cute??

Carlito C. Caterpiller's MathHouse Games is appropriate for preschool through elementary school. My very academically inclined second grader was beyond many of the games, but I expected that. He still had fun! My struggling learner will be using these games for a while though.

Something to Note

When you order Carlito C. Caterpiller's Math House Games, you are getting the game instructions. You have to go to the website and download some files for the manipulatives that are required for the games. Many games require at least some prep before hand so be aware that you can't purchase it and begin as soon as it arrives. Prep work is listed under "Get Ready" in the instructions for each game. Very simple, but it does take a little planning. :)

TOS Review: Games for Competitors Tri-Cross

Created by a family and based out of Atlanta, Tri-Cross, a Classic Game of Strategy for the 21st Century, is like nothing else (we totally agree there!) It is challenging and gets increasingly harder as desired for more challenging play. The creator describes Tri-Cross as a mix between Stratego, Chess and Checkers.

Because Farm Boy loves chess and checkers so much, I felt he would love Tri-Cross too. It was a bit challenging though as it is recommended for ages 10 and up.

Earning several awards, I think Tri-Cross is destined to a household favorite - it is here!!

REVIEW: Visionary Womanhood Gatherings (and a GIVEAWAY!)

Twenty years ago I didn’t even realize what I didn’t know. Visionary Womanhood Gatherings (p. 22)

When I met my husband I was not even a glimpse of the woman I am today. My life plan had me graduating college (though I had no idea in what), moving to the big city (I thought Atlanta,) becoming an independent employee (again who knows in what kind of job!) and living up the simple life, advancing in my career and not being dependent on a man. I did not have any plans for marriage. Or kids.

And then I met him.

And all that changed. And fast. I wanted to get married. I thought about having kids - even wanted them one day!

Fast forward to today. I never thought I would be a homeschooling mom of two with no desire to work outside my home. I never thought that I would want to take care of a house full of boys (the grown one included) and actually become a helpmeet. I once thought only of myself and the things I wanted to do and to accomplish. Now, I want to grow my children up to make a difference for God. To focus on the things not of this world. The things that really matter.

TOS Review: Before Five in a Row

I first became familiar with Five in a Row when my oldest was just a wee one. I was attending a MOPS group and one of my closest friends was planning to homeschool. I was fascinated by the concept of homeschooling but at the time had no idea I could since my oldest had special needs. (But THAT is another story!)

Five in a Row (or FIAR in online homeschool circles) is a weekly unit-based curriculum that focuses one one book for an entire week ("the unit.") The parent reads the book to their children - even if the child can already read. This "sets the tone" for the week and further concretes a bond between parent and child. The weekly units cover one subject per day through a variety of activities.

When purchasing the Five in a Row products, what you get is a lesson plan book for mom (or dad!) Many of the books that are used in the curriculum are available at the library or you may choose to purchase them.

Before Five in a Row (BFIAR) is the preschool program. It is designed for children ages two through four. The activities are lighter and much less school-y. The children may not even realize they are learning, but will savor the discussion and fun that the program provides for them.

What's It Gonna Cost Me?
FIAR products are available in printed format through Rainbow Resources (linked here with a personal note from the authors) or digitally through the author's website.

When purchasing any of the Five in a Row unit studies, what you are actually purchasing is a lesson plan book or guide. It is for the teacher, not the student. The books used in the studies must either be purchased or borrowed. With 70 units in four volumes, the author encourages you as the teacher to choose the units that you want to do in the order you want to do them. Many books are available in local libraries and Rainbow Resource have literature bundle packs for those who want to add the books to their home libraries permanently. I've seen many of the books in curriculum sales too!

Ginny Owens has been one of my favorite artists for the last ten years. Her music helped me through the most trying time in my life. One song in particular still wraps God's arms around me whenever I hear it. And now, after five years, she has come out with her ninth album! I was so excited to hear it was being released and that I was going to have a chance to review it!!

My youngest is pretty advanced for his age (almost 8.) He had a bit of trouble with this game since we haven't covered a variety of years in social studies yet. (Our social studies curriculum starts with the ancients and moves up through the ages. If you have only covered ancients and the US like we have, it may be better to wait a few years on this game.)

Set in Memphis, a city near and dear to my heart, this movie really hit home for me. The main characters deal with the death of a child and the struggle the family ensues as a result of it. I felt it was a true portrayal of how the death of a child affects the whole family and the different ways people react to a loss. Other issues in the movie include race relations, family dynamics and job stress. This movie is Rated PG-13 so if you have younger children, be aware of that!

Our Schoolroom 2011-2012

We are blessed to have a dedicated schoolroom that we can use for most of the regular school year. It does not have air-conditioning but it does have heat. We don't use it from June-September/October though the kids will go in there from time to time to read or play on the floor. I love having a dedicated space and look forward to getting back in there. I am still adding things and the look of it changes here and there, but the feel of the room stays the same.

I have a new (BIG!!) whiteboard coming that was graciously gifted to us by a friend who needed it gone. Beneath it we have plans for some new shelving for our books which seems to multiply by the week. The curtains are a new addition this year. They are so bright and airy - and I just love the colors!! The green twin comforter covering the couch was a thrift store find earlier this year.

We found our desk at an antique mall in January this year. It actually still has the inkwell holes in it. The top flips up to store things inside and even has a small prop stick attached to one side. I hate that their are names carved and written all over them, but it isn't possible to refinish the carvings without compromising the desk. We blame the sillies and distractions on Pete, who as you can see, sat here, at some time in the past.

The room is painted two different colors, pale yellow on two walls and pale green on the other two. It was like that when we moved in. :) The whole room desperately needs a fresh paint, but that will have to wait until I can find something similar in an "oops sale." We are also hoping to add a rug this year (soon!)

I came across My Name is NOT Monkey Girl while searching for a flag bracket for our homeschool.

I plan to buy this book for our home library and an additional copy for our local library. I want to encourage you all to do the same. Toilet Seat Two-Fer (Or How to Keep Your Skinny Minnie From Falling In)

Signs You Have a Skinny Minnie

Pants and shorts never fit correctly.
S/he has long legs that go on for days.
Belts are not a fashion accessory, they are a necessity.
You adore clothing lines with adjustable waistbands in size slim.
Even with size slim adjustable waistbands, the kid may need a belt.

Another issue for Skinny Minnies is that toilet seats are sometimes a challenge. If you happen to a have a SUPER skinny kid, they may have an issue actually falling in while, ehem, doing their thing.

I'll let you ponder that one a minute.

Poor things.

We have, after years of dealing with this issue, found an answer to the toilet seat problem.

No more hanging on for dear life.

No more wet bottoms from falling in. (It happens.)

And the for the rest of the family with normal sized hind-end parts, the toilet seat becomes a regular one by just lowering the lid and raising it back up.

Genius.

We recently purchased this baby at the local big box store in our hometown. Best $33 I've spent in a L-O-N-G time.

2011-2012 Curriculum

We began homeschooling in June 2009. We had just moved back to GA in January 2009 and the last part of the school year didn't go very well. We dove into homeschool as soon as the regular school year ended and never looked back. Now we take June and July off for summer break, but we start our summer school a few weeks into August.

In January 2011, I changed things up a bit and finally found some curriculums I could fully get behind. Since it was January we did not finish them by May when we ended our school year so we are continuing where we left off this fall. I didn't want to skip anything that I thought they knew and find out later that they didn't know it. So we started from the beginning of the curriculums in January. We are going to double up some lessons this fall so by January 2012 year we are caught up to where we are "supposed" to be.

Farm Boy is still taking taekwondo. Music Man will have drum lessons. Both will be taking a boys breakdancing class at a local not-for-profit dance studio. They are also both taking Homeschool PE at a local recreation department. I'm still hoping to add art in to our schedule somewhere.

Dried Onion Soup Mix

I don't use a lot of processed foods. This first came out of necessity and needing to be frugal. Then I bought even less of them when we started the Feingold Diet to combat the symptoms of ADHD. I further scaled down my purchase of processed foods when I began realizing that I wanted the most control I could have over what I was feeding my family.

With our changes in diet, I began trying to new recipes. My family prefers their favorites however and some just aren't very healthy. I attempt to make them as healthy as possible, making changes where I can. One such change is making my own spice mixes. This began with Feingold and continues today.

Dried Onion Soup Mix

8 teaspoons dried onion flakes
1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley (I use 2 t since I love parsley!)
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper (I use 1/8 t since my kids prefer less spice.)

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and use immediately. Or you can store in an airtight container for up to six months.

Tips for Camping with Kids from a Camping Rookie

My major in college was Outdoor Recreation and I totally scoffed at the thought of car camping, much less a camper. I loved backpacking and the whole "pack it in, pack it out" philosophy. However, having kids, especially one with special needs, has changed my thoughts drastically. We had access to a camper this past weekend and jumped at the chance to get out of town. So we embarked on our first real camping trip away from home. On a holiday weekend. With two days to prepare.

And it was awesome. And we also learned a lot.

Tips for Camping with Kids from a Camping Rookie

1. Pack everything the night before. If you have to make a stop or two in route, you may end up with cranky kids and that's no way to start a vacation.

2. You don't need as many clothes as you think you do. Everybody recycles clothes and nobody is really truly clean in the woods. Even with a kid who changes clothes often at home due to messiness is fine with dirty clothes while camping.

3. Take lots of yard games. Our boys brought a soft nerd-like bat and ball and a soccer ball. Not great for a crowded campground. The Saturn ball was a great boredom distractor though, as was Uno and Checkers.

4. Take some friends with you! Camping is a great family activity but it is even better when you have someone to share the memories with. If you plan ahead, sites can be reserved next to each other. You could even spring for an additional campsite between the two families once the kids get old enough to stay in a tent alone.

5. If the college kids next to you party all night, do not hesitaite to contact the appropriate authorities. You paid for your campsite and deserve a good night's sleep.

6. Get up early one morning to watch the sunrise over the lake, beach or other body of water. I watch it almost every day at home but it is worth getting up to see it over the water.

7. If you go to another state, find out the laws before you go. Think boating, life jackets, car seats, bike helmets etc. If you plan on fishing, find out the those requirements and laws too.

8. Try to get recommendations on a campground before you go. Find out if it is family friendly or more of a fish camp. It is also helpful to know if the No Alcohol rule or Quiet Time hours are actually enforced.

9. Don't go out on a holiday weekend on your first real camping trip. We did and there was a reason for it. We went in to the weekend knowing it was going to be crowded and it was fine for us. however, I would not recommend it for a typical rookie. :)

10. Be flexible. Kinda goes without saying if you have kids but for a planner like me, a reminder is sometimes necessary!

So there you have it - ten tips I wish I had known before we left home on Friday. You'll hear more about the trip in the coming weeks. We can't wait to go again!

A Camping We Will Go

Two days ago, my husband came home from work and told me that we were going camping this weekend. I was super excited but slightly freaked because of my over-planning nature. Two days was a very short amount of time to plan a long weekend away. Camping. During the biggest holiday of the summer. Oh and did I mention it isn't something that we do regularly. So it isn't like I am really prepared to just go camping with two days notice.

Well, then I remembered.

Katie Kimball from Kitchen Stewardship just came out with the 2nd Edition of her family camping cookbook, Kitchen Stewardship in the Big Woods.

Kitchen Stewardship was one of the first real foods websites I found. I read everything she posts (almost immediately most days!) I have learned so much from her in the almost year that I have been reading her blog. And let me tell ya, that girl researches. Her posts are thorough and informative and she makes you think. A lot. And completely analyze everything you put in your mouth. Or your family's mouths. Read her blog. You won't be sorry.

Katie has made meal planning while camping super simple for traditional (real) food eaters. Kitchen Stewardship in the Big Woods contains 14 new recipes, 35 in all! There are printable packing and to-do lists, which are awesome for planners and list makers like me!! I was quickly able to plan my menu and move on with that part of the preparation process.

Her other two ebooks, Healthy Snacks to Go and The Everything Beans Book are also amazing!

Decorating Dilemma: Mostly Mistreated Master Bedroom

So, months and months ago (before Christmas!!) I found some awesome linens at my local thrift store. There were multiple pieces (topsheets and several panels of curtains and though it was so not my typical style and color scheme, I snatched them up. I had been reading Nester for quite some and had been slowly gravitating towards more cool colors especially since there is a lot of dark paneling in our (rental) house. Well, there was no time to mess with them before Christmas so I put them "in a really good spot." (Do you ever do that?) This time I actually DID know that they were in a sewing tote. I just couldn't find THAT particular tote. But, I digress. Here it is JULY and I finally was able to lay my hands on them again. But my thoughts on my bedroom have changed about a dozen times since I bought these beautiful things and well now, I'm not sure.

Mostly Mistreated Master Curtain

I made my curtains during the week in January when we were snowed in. I had planned for them to be totally mistreated, but the fabric was raveling terribly and after months of looking, I couldn't find any affordable trim. I slightly mistreated them by hemming the edges and hanging them plain and simple with drape clips on a conduit curtain rod.

Eventually I will make this bed. I want to paint some large pieces of plywood or something to add some color in there too, kinda like fake walls. I am thinking a dark wood for the bed but may go with a distressed color - not sure yet.

I have an idea for my duvet cover which will be large pieced squares and machine quilted in all white. I cannot wait to get started on that!

An then today when I pulled my beloved fabric out, it had a creamy background instead of the white back ground I remembered.

Can you see through all those wrinkles?

I couldn't believe it. I was thinking all along it was a white background and that my white quilted duvet cover, white and taupe curtains, white bed skirt etc would be perfect. Now I'm not sure.

Yes, those are empty frames. Still trying to decide what to do with them. I used the nail holes that were there so they are hanging a little wacky right now.

I just realized that you never seen cords in decorator blogs. Man, that looks awful!
Do they even have alarm clocks in their homes?

So what do you think? Does my fabric work even with the white?

The Start of Summer Boy Brunch

Several years ago the Mother's Day Out program Farm Boy was attending held a tea party for the moms around Mother's Day. Music Man was in school at the time and of course did not attend. That got him to thinking though and he really wanted to have a tea party. Well, we couldn't have a TEA PARTY since I had BOYS. So I had to come up with something else.

School was nearing the end and after hearing them talk and talk about tea parties for a few weeks, I came up with an End-of-School Boy Brunch. We had it on the Saturday after school was out.

The first year we had monkey bread and milk. I served them on glass plates with fancy (dollar store) stemware with a straw. There were fancy napkins and candles - nothing matched but they didn't care! It was a celebration. And summer began.

The next year we were still settling into our new life in Georgia and though we had it, I didn't take pictures. Our third annual Boy Brunch was held after Sports Camp last year and I again forgot to take pictures. I remember we ate cake though. I had just completed a cake decorating class at Micheal's.

We realized last year that it could no longer be and End-of-School Boy Brunch since now we homeschool and school year round. We aren't as formal in the summer, and usually most of take June off. But we work on math three days a week and read everyday throughout the summer.

This year's Boy Brunch was held June 1, 2011. We had doughnuts this year since I forgot to put the cinnamon rolls together before I went to bed. Insomnia does have its merits since I woke at 3:45AM and remembered I hadn't made the cinnamon rolls.

This is what happens when you are tired, double the amount of butter for a recipe and end up having to double the whole recipe in order to not throw out a whole stick of butter.

This is what happens when you are laughing so hard you have to take a picture for your blog, run to your computer to load the pics and don't remove the overflowing dough when you first see it.

And these are the happy boys enjoying the slightly yeast-y doughnuts for our4th Annual Start of Summer Boy Brunch.

Fifteen years ago I met an amazing woman during the most trying period of my life. We both lost a son within a few months of each other and found ourselves on the same online pregnancy loss support board. TOS Review: Apologia Read From the Heart

I began reading aloud chapter books to my boys last summer. Before then, we mostly read children's books. We began with the Little House series and they loved it! We continued with all the books in the series and had a designated time we read every day. We laughed and we cried and we lived those stories day in and day out. When we finished, I knew that my boys would need a transition time to let go of Pa, Ma, Laura and Mary. So we didn't start anything else for a while. I eventually became antsy for that reading time again and mentioned to my boys that we needed to start something else. We struggled through the first few chapters of several other books but couldn't get into a grove with it. The books I chose just weren't quite right. (I mean what could rightly follow Laura Ingalls?)

So we stopped reading aloud chapter books again. Then someone gave us a copy of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. We were hooked again. But it pained me that we missed out on several months of read-alouds before settling in again. I wished that I had some way to figuring out what to read next with my kids. I wished for some way that I could choose a book that would be appropriate (no scary pirates in it) or too grown-up.

Read for the Heart is a book to help you choose what to read. Written by Sarah Clarkson, this book about books gives a brief synopsis of each book it recommends. An appropriate age is also given as well as the copyright date and author's info. She has listed over 1000 books appropriate for family reading. Covering everything from fantasy and fairy tales to historical fiction and from poetry to picture books and everything in between, this book is the book to add to your homeschool library (or any family library!)

If you have kids, this book is the book to add to your home library.

Listed in the appendix are the Caldecott and Newbery winners and a list of the authors favorites. We are working our way down the Favorite Read-Alouds for the Whole Family this summer beginning with Little Men.

TOS Review: Eagles Wings Considering God's Creation

I was so totally excited when I saw we were reviewing Considering God's Creation. I have been looking at it longingly online for quite some time. It is hard to "ooo and ahhh" over something when you see it online. But I was. And then I got it in my hands. I started "ooo-ing" and "ahhhh-ing." And squealing. And jumping up and down. My boys said, "what mama? what?" And then they saw I had a box, rolled their eyes and walked out of the room. I snatched it out of the box and started thumbing through it. (And then I squealed a little more!)

Considering God's Creation looks at natural science from a biblical approach. Written by two sister who were missionary kids and homeschooled themselves, this basic introduction to science covers subjects such as weather, the solar system, the plant and animal kingdoms and anatomy and physiology all from a Christian perspective. The subject units are divided by individual chapter, called "lessons" and then subdivided by day.

For example when covering Weather Lesson 7, it is divided into five separate lessons. Once completed, a notebook page, The Weather Recipe, is reference from student workbook. The consumable student workbook is a book bound paperback that is used for notebooking. This will certainly appeal to those students who enjoy hands-on activities. (Farm Boy loves them! Music Man needs a lot of help, but really enjoys it one we get going with it. And notebooking is great for fine motor skills!)

What to Teach When
This curriculum is adaptable from 2nd grade through 7th grade. It can also be used for older students who do not have a strong background in science.

The Marvelous Mississippi Staycation

When most people think of Mississippi, they think of the mighty river. And with good reason! However, one of the great unknowns about Mississippi (the state) is the plethora of cultural and recreational escapes that are at one's disposal. The delta basin, long known for its cotton production, BB King (and Lucille), and Morgan Freeman, is also home to two nationally renowned potterys. The northwest corner (Desoto County) is home to one of America's largest little league facilities, Snowden Grove in Southaven, and America's fastest growing city, Olive Branch.

Enter the STAYCATION.

With a Staycation, you actually stay at home, enjoying your area's attractions. These coul dbe things you enjoy doing or trying out something that you may not have done before. Go ahead, try that tourist-y thing you have always thought was cheesy. You may just enjoy yourself!

I have put together several days worth of Staycation activities. There are also lists of things to do by category such as rainy day activities and beat the heat ideas.

The Day Camping Trip
COST: gas and a picnic

When I think of camping, I think of hanging out with my boys and husband and maybe even our dogs – hiking, enjoying nature, eating food cooked over a fire and roasting marshmallows. With camping comes that very dreaded sleeping arrangement – a large “car camping” tent on a chilly ground waking up to an aching back and instant coffee, that is IF you sleep at all. Surely it has to be easier. Well, sure it is, but I don't have the resources to outfit our adventure through REI at the moment. So I have come up with a much, much easier option – the DAY CAMPING trip.

Imagine the commercial of a well-known credit card ….

Sleeping in your own bed after a day in the woods: PRICELESS

HIKE

One of our favorite places to get away was Arkabutla Lake. Hiking on some of the 24 miles multi-use trails, swimming at of three designated swimming beaches, grilling some burgers, fishing in the lakes and playing on the playground - that sounds like an awesome day to me! Please be aware that corps land allows hunting during the appropriate seasons! Other US Army Corps lakes include Sardis, Enid and Grenada. Many outdoor activities are available including hiking, horseback riding, hunting, camping, boating, swimming, and fishing. Life jackets are required for all persons swimming outside of designated swimming areas or using a small class vessel (26 foot boat of any kind!)

There are numerous opportunities for outdoor fun in the in over one million acres of public land in the state of Mississippi.

EAT

One of our favorite activities in the spring, summer and fall is to pack up a picnic and head to a park. Sometimes we choose a local park, but other times we venture out to a state park. With over 20 parks and recreation areas within the state of Mississippi, there are plenty of parks with different amenities available. Most have grills available if you prefer to cookout rather than picnic – or spend the whole day and do both! Many state parks have beaches on their lakes with designated swimming areas. There are also playgrounds available in most state parks as well as most of the community parks in your area. Due to the recent floods, please call ahead before heading out to a recreation area near the Mississippi River or the deep south coast.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

In addition to hiking, two of our favorite activities at a state or local park are geocaching and letterboxing.

Geocaching

Think high tech treasure hunt. All you need is a portable (handheld) GPS and some coordinates to tell you where to look for a cleverly concealed box in the woods. Use the search tool to locate the are you are going to and seek out your treasure. My boys love treasure hunting because in addition to the logbook that you sign, there are often trinkets or “swag” to trade out of each treasure box. They love this part of geocaching which they affectionately call treasure hunting.

Letterboxing

Letterboxing is a bit different than geocaching. This is the ultimate for Indiana Jones lovers. Letterboxes are hidden like geocaches but instead of using a GPS and coordinates, you must use written instructions or decipher a set of clues. Some are quite easy to find and others are more challenging.

Athens, GA is known for its musical heritage and college town feel. But did you know it is also rich in the area of fun-filled family attractions? Since we homeschool, we often take advantage of the many educational activities that are available throughout Athens and its surrounding communities as well.

Being on a single income budget and having my husband in grad school will make this year's vacation budget non-existent. We were already thinking of long weekends in place of our vacation, however, with gas prices like they are, the long weekends are quickly leaving us behind as well.

HIKE

Home to such recreation facilities as Sandy Creek, the North Oconee Greenway and Memorial Park, there are no shortage of trails from hiking and biking trails to horseback riding and anything in between. One of our favorites and an Athens "must-do" is Birchmore Trail in Memorial Park. There is so much history and quirkiness to that trail - much like Athens itself!

EAT

With ten parks and recreation areas within a 50-mile driving distance of Athens, there are plenty of parks with different amenities available. At $5 per day (a yearly pass of $50,) visiting Georgia State Parks are truly a bargain! Playgrounds are available in most state parks as well as most of the community parks in Athens.

Among our favorite local state parks is Hard Labor Creek just southeast of Athens in Morgan County. Hiking on some of the 24 miles multi-use trails, swim at lake, grilling some burgers, fishing in the lakes and playing on the playground - that sounds like an awesome day to me! A few of the first geocaches I found were located at Hard Labor Creek and I have since found letterboxes there as well. There is even reasonably-priced golf for dad at The Creek at Hard Labor Creek Golf Course who lays claim to the “hardest starting hole in Georgia!”

A few weeks ago we took our boys kayaking for the first time. Farm Boy loved it. Music Man asked to stay with grandma next time. :)

Make a day of it by taking your time, leisurely paddling down the river and enjoying a technology-free day! Pack a lunch and bring plenty of snacks and water (or grab some in their restaurant!)

Anna Ruby Falls

Last year, my husband's parents took our family with them to their favorite cabin in the north Georgia Mountains near Helen. It was a wonderful weekend away and we enjoyed it immensely. It is, however, so close that we have been several times to just spend the day.

The boys got a huge kick out of the fact that we spent our honeymoon in Helen (almost fifteen years ago!!) Our family has hiked the same trail up to Anna Ruby Falls located in Unicoi State Park that my husband and I hiked the only afternoon it didn't rain on our honeymoon.

We love spending time at the Nora Mills Granary, an operational grist mill just outside of Helen. We pick up some incredible freshly milled flour and cornmeal. Stop in next door for a cup of java at JumpinGoat Coffee.

Mark of the Potter is an amazing craft shop featuring the work of 30 artists including four resident potters. It is worth the drive to visit the oldest craft shop in the same location. Fisherman will drool at the size of the trout who call that area home. Fishing is banned there but you can feed the fish. And dream about them. :) Skipping rocks is also a great past time for my boys.

On our list of things to do this year while in Helen is a visit to Helen Tubing and Waterpark. Each a bargain in and of itself, you can choose to “Tube the Hooch”or play all day in the waterpark (and tubing is included in the price of admission to the waterpark!)

Wonderful Watkinsville

Watkinsville is just a few minutes from Athens. This quiet little town has so many wonderful offerings from Harris Shoals to Heritage Parks, First Friday and the Oconee Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. The kids will enjoy playing on the wooden playground at Harris Shoals Park. Plan on playing in the shoals while you are there!

TOS Review: enVision Math 1st Grade

When I received enVision Math, I was impressed with the layout and design. (I'm such a desktop publishing nerd that I actually collect fonts. I have over 400 of them. Seriously.) I quickly realized that much time and money was spent formulating a beautiful workbook for a brick-and-mortar school system.

Unfortunately, I was unable to utilize much of the consumable workbook since we did not receive any teacher's guides or instruction on how the book was to be used. Throughout the workbook, there were separate notes to the parent and the teacher and even a note called the "Home-School Connection." The Home-School Connections actually referred to homework and explained to the parents what was done in class. Being a homeschool teacher, I am teacher and parent. I certainly don't need to tell myself what we did in class. *grin* But then there were just many things I just could not make sense of. For example, an early lesson asked something so very simple, I thought it was a bit too easy for my first grader even at the very beginning of the school year. (He is advanced, but had done a lot of what it was asking in preschool.) A lesson just a few pages later gave instructions that I would not except a first grader to be able to read. (Farm Boy did read those instructions to me when asked, but it is also the end of the school year and his reading level is accelerated.)

Final Word

It is impossible to give a positive review based on incomplete information. Without access to the teacher's manual or the Digital System Access which is included in the price of the consumable Student Workbook I don't feel like I was able to get a good reading on the curriculum itself. My overall feeling is that due to cost, it is not a good fit for homeschoolers. With some work, Pearson may be able to reach homeschoolers, but it would need to be more specialized for homeschool use and packaged as such.

TOS Review: Talking Fingers-Wordy Qwerty

Wordy Querty is a computer program by Talking Fingers designed for 2nd and 3rd graders to teach phonetic spelling. It is the sequel to the award winning program, Read, Write and Type designed by the same company. A collection of 20 lessons, the student is taken through a fun way to learn the spelling rules.

My boys enjoy most computer games and Wordy Querty was no exception. I personally thought that the graphics (talking keyboards) were a bit dated-looking and cheesy, but they appealed to my boys who enjoyed watching the keyboards talk and move around.

The program also didn't seem to move as quickly as I wanted to, but I think that was to solidify the rules before moving on to another rule or activity. Some parts were a bit of a challenge for both of them to get through since they did not manipulate the mouse as quickly as they needed to go on to the next level.

When each lesson is completed, a song is created to help remember the rule. The songs are available on a separate audio CD, Jingle Spells, which is included with the purchase of the Home Program. You can also purchase the CD separately for $10. Listen to a few MP3s of the songs or purchase on iTunes!

Overall, I would have to give Wordy Querty a thumbs-up since my boys (and their cousin who happened to be visiting one day) enjoyed it. Furthermore, when they burst into song throughout the day singing the catchy little songs about spelling, I know they are at least thinking about it in some way. Anything with music appeals to Music Man and I am always making up songs to help him remember things. I will most likely order the CD since I don't have to make them up myself!!

TOS Review: Math Dog Math

Mad Dog Math is a cute math fact system that really appeals to the younger crowd. Designed by a veteran educator while she was a third grade teacher, this program has been in use in the classroom for 25 years. Now available for home use as a supplement to homeschool curriculum or to help students in brick-and-mortar classrooms who may be struggling with memorizing the basic operations vital to success in high levels of math.

The Mad Dog Math system is designed to be used for just ten minutes a day in a daily math routine. A fresh alternative to the plain Jane worksheets I grew up with, Mad Dog Math covers all operations and great for those just learning math facts or older students who need a little help.

There are two ways to use Mad Dog Math - a paper-and-pencil, or binder edition, or the computer edition. We reviewed the computer based version which is very helpful for Music Man since he is challenged in the area of writing.

I loved that I was able to set the time allowed to complete the drills - 2-minute, 1-minute or 30 seconds. You can set the operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) and fact family you wish to practice and progress is recorded each time the program is used. There are three levels and a challenge level to ensure that mastery is completed.

The first two levels are addition and subtraction. Level 1 requires students to fill in the answer like a traditional math drill, 4+2= ___. At Level 2, the problem becomes more of a challenge while actually fill in a missing part of the problem, 4+__=6. At Level 3, students work on multiplication and division. The Challenge Level requires more thinking by mixing up the operations and what answer is asked for!

The drills go all the way to fact family eighteen, which I have not yet seen in a drill program!
